How Do Students Become Good Readers?

As our emergent readers develop into upper- emergent and early fluent readers, we need to constantly remind them to use their “Good Reader” strategies.  They must consistently ask themselves these questions as they approach unfamiliar text:  Does it look right?  Does it sound right?  Does it make sense?

Proven Results

Marcia Freeman’s program works. Thousands of teachers across the country have used her techniques to create active classroom writing communities and effect dramatic improvements in their students’ writing competencies and test scores.

  • Students and teachers benefit from the instructional consistency and school-wide coordination resulting from Marcia Freeman’s progressive curriculum of grade-appropriate writing-craft skills
  • Students see immediate improvements in their writing as they apply concrete, targeted craft skills. And they enjoy tangible rewards because all students, not just gifted writers, have the opportunity to succeed
  • Teachers and students are freed from common writing-process frustrations
  • Students become more motivated and competent readers and learners
  • Students learn critical-thinking skills that support and facilitate a lifetime of learning

"The writing process is what writers do; the writing craft is what they know."
