Ed Butts taught English and social studies for seven years at The Learning Center of Sosua, a bilingual private school in the Dominican Republic. Because supplementary material was not always available (in Sosua), it was often necessary for him to prepare his own quizzes and exams for English grammar, literature, history and geography. He had considerable success at encouraging students to write creatively. To make grammar classes more interesting he wrote a series of "grammar" plays and verse, that went over very well and thus Idioms for Aliens came into existence.
He also had several non-fiction books, fiction books and articles published on a wide variety of topics. These topics include: history, current events, film, sports, travel, books, humor, folklore, and education.
Ed currently resides in his hometown of Guelph, Ontario, Canada.
